Should You Use Home Remedies For Termites?

Blog

Termites feed on cellulose, which is found in plant matter and wood. Unfortunately, your home is a good source for it. Termites can cause significant damage to your home. Therefore, it is important to take action as soon as you have spotted them. If you suspect your home has termites, here is what you need to know.

What Are the Signs?

Termites can enter your home through cracks in the foundation and even tunnel through the dirt to get inside of it. As they travel and start to nest, they can leave signs of their presence inside and outside your home.

If you believe you have termites, look for brown, dry tunnels near the foundation of the home. You might even notice discarded wings and piles of sawdust from the termites eating through the wood. You can also tap the wood to determine if you have an infestation. If the wood sounds hollow, chances are, termites have eaten through the wood.

In addition to looking for these signs, look for swollen flooring. The floor might look as if it has been water damaged. If you notice sagging along the ceiling, termite damage has likely caused it.

Can You Use Home Remedies?

Some homeowners turn to home remedies to get rid of termites. For instance, it is purported that orange oil extract can help get rid of subterranean termites. The oil is sprayed in the tunnels in which termites travel.

Boric acid is also used by some homeowners. The boric acid is mixed with water and applied in the areas in which the termites are suspected to be. Other wood surfaces are covered with the mixture as a preventative measure.

Whether or not you use home remedies is your decision. However, there are some drawbacks to consider. For instance, the termites might detect the presence of the substance used and simply avoid going near it.

Home remedies also lose their effectiveness over time. As they fail, the termites will return and can nest again in your home and the surrounding area. If that happens, it could be more challenging to get rid of them in the future.

The safest and most effective method of getting rid of termites is to rely on a professional exterminator. The exterminator can assess the depth of the situation and determine what measures would be best for termites elimination. He or she can also make periodic visits to your home to ensure the termites stay away. For more information, contact companies like Tri-County Termite & Pest Control, Inc.

Choosing Safe, Effective Pest Control

When we realized that our daughter had severe allergies, we started thinking about what types of products we were using around our home. Instead of spraying things everywhere, we started focusing on natural, herbal remedies. Believe it or not, we even found chemical free ways to control the pests in our house. We contacted an all natural pest control company who specialized in effective, humane treatment. For example, we substituted our chemical rodent traps for glue versions, which allowed the rodents to be released back into the wild. Check out this blog for tips for choosing safe, effective pest control methods.
